With humble beginnings in Queens, NY, back in the 50s and 60s, Mr. Basser and Mr. Kaufman, our original founders, saw in each other a complement of skills: a commercial realtor and a commercial builder. Over half a century and millions of square feet later, from mom-and-pop stores to massive retailers, Basser-Kaufman is still going strong. We develop, lease and manage a variety of community and regional shopping centers utilizing the same qualities that have stood the test of time: skill, excellence, dependability and a focus on developing value. These are the solid footings upon which Basser-Kaufman was founded. And today, from land acquisition, approvals, and construction to property leasing and property management — the full spectrum of retail real estate development — the next generation at Basser-Kaufman continues to build on that success.

Mr. Kaufman is still active in the business, along with family members Steven Kaufman and Marc Kemp — also Principals.

In 1955, Mr. Kaufman began building residential properties in Queens and Nassau County. Mr. Basser was a family friend who grew up in the same Queens, NY neighborhood. The Basser family had been involved in commercial real estate for decades.

In the 1960s, big retailers began moving into strip shopping centers; Mr. Basser recognized the potential of a commercial real estate development company that catered to this market. He had solid retail connections, but needed a reliable builder. In 1963, he asked Mr. Kaufman to become his partner, and Basser-Kaufman was born.

Basser-Kaufman started building in the mid-1960s. The first big project was the Woodmere Mews in Woodmere, New York — a very successful garden apartment complex. Soon, the firm began focusing on retail, and built its first shopping center in Manchester, Connecticut, in 1970.

Today, Basser-Kaufman owns more than 40 shopping centers and has established relationships with major retail tenants throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

We’re hands-on owners who boast a personal relationship with most of our tenants, from big box retailers to smaller mom-and-pop stores. We understand our customers’ needs and work hard to address them at all stages of development.

A fully integrated real estate development firm, Basser-Kaufman does it all from the ground up. From land acquisition and approvals to construction, leasing, and property management, we’re involved in our properties every step of the way.

The Basser-Kaufman management team has long been active in the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). For the past 25 years, our firm has also been a strong supporter of diabetes research through the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Diabetes Research Institute. Basser-Kaufman has helped raise money and awareness through an annual tennis tournament and, more recently, an annual golf tournament, which together have helped raise more than $5,000,000.
